Here's my philosophy on the situation , my average shot on a coyote in my parts is 300 yards , its not stretching the barrel on the AR 223 by any means it will get it there , we are lacking knock down power , you cant simply get enough powder in the case , for one max loads on certain rounds is 24 grains of powder with a 55 grain bullet now the 243 with a 58 grain bullet shooting the same powder is 44 grains the 58 grain 243 has the same power at 300 plus yards where the 223 has at 100 exactly.......its a no brainer , the 223 at 400 is running 2457 fps with 736 ft lbs of energy with 21'' of drop , and the 243 I running 2951 fps and 1122 ft lbs with 13'' of drop with a 100 yard zero ......its pure power and a straight shooting round without blowing them apart ......I see it and believe it

Good lord, 300 yard averages! Screw that. My blood doesn't get pumping until they hit 100. LOL!
The majority of my Indiana coyotes come inside 100 yards before I pop the first primer, day or night. If it's a single coyote showing up early in the stand, I'll try to coax him inside 50 yards before shooting. That's what trips my trigger in this game, coaxing predators in close.
All bets are off after I've shot the first one. When I'm fortunate enough to kill 3-4-5 coyotes on a stand, I'm often shooting 200-400 yards on the stragglers. I'll also shoot deeper when it plays out well for the timing of my stand (allowing others to keep coming).
I've said many times on here, if there comes a time I can't call coyotes inside 100 yards on a regular basis... I'll quit. Coyotes that won't commit just don't do it for me. Calling pressure has sure changed the way they act but I like to think I've stayed ahead of the curve. The number of people out there messing with coyotes is sure to peak anytime now, hopefully my kids will enjoy the good old days once again.

Yep 300 yard average , i'll take 50 yard shots all day long but I also like the rush of killing singles at 400 and 500 yards , I have shot them at 10 steps yes it is a rush calling them into your lap , during competitions and calling at night I do just that but out hunting for fun I like to stretch the barrel .
