Killed my first DIY Public land CO elk this September... what an experience! We almost had a 5X5 about 6 days in but no dice. I took her on the first day. My plan was meat in the freezer. I'd chase horns with my buddies after that. We had a great hunt. Attachments:

I just shot the cow and we were after the bull for my buddy... man, that 1,000 ft climb winded us. Time for a breather. This was the first morning out. Our breathing got a little better after we hunted for a few days. Attachments:

Great job Baumy and nice pics!
Anyone else have any luck?
Did you cook up any back straps that night?
Congrats!

thanks bud... no one else tagged out, but we came very close to a 5X5. And no, we didn't eat the back straps that night because i didn't get her packed out and everything done till 9 or so that night and we were worn out! I just put her on ice then took her to the processor the next morning. I also wasn't completely sure what all I had to have when I took her in... didn't want any trouble.
