With archery season opening on a Monday (10/1) I wasn't able to get out until this morning. The weather was awesome, rained overnight and cleared off around 3am with a brisk 36 degrees on the thermometer when I took off at 6am. I ended up seeing over 20 does, 7 bucks, two coons and had a coyote howl within 100 yards but I never laid eyes on him. Three of the small yearling bucks sparred 15 yards from my tree for half an hour. One basket rack 8 point chased three does past me pretty hard. All kinds of interesting behavior for early October. Around 9:20, shortly after the coyote howled, I had two bucks and a doe come walking past. She presented a good shot at 13 yards so I gave her a RAGE through the shoulder and lungs. With the new online check-in system I was able to have her chilling in no time. The inner loins were pulled out and iced immediately, they'll be on the table at noon tomorrow! I'm thinking about taking the hams down to a processor in Kentucky and have em' make what they call "deer bacon". I hear good things.

Unfortunately I missed a nice fat doe Monday morning and haven't seen anything since.... At least I have the miss out of the way now.

I had some of the deer bacon from Webbs last year. Can't say that it tasted like regular bacon but it was good, just different. There is a guy between Corydon and Lanesville that makes some hot venison bratworst that are killer. Mike

cz527, I have heard the reports on EHD also. Can't say that I've seen any indication of it around here. We've been seeing 300-450 deer a night while shining.
This particular farm is loaded and they want them ALL gone. Sat a couple hours this morning and saw three does and the little 11 point I posted in the photography forum. The neighboring property (no hunting) is loaded with shooter bucks, a few 140-150 inchers and another that is framed like a booner. Only saw him twice, couldn't get a good score estimate, but I suspect when the rut fires up I'll get aquainted with a couple of them big boys. Too much estrogen on my side of the hill, they'll come callin.
